HYPOP Partner Cluster TWEED ahs recently published an article on French magazine Hydrogen+ , highlighting Belgium’s strategic and ambitious push to become a major European hydrogen hub. The country’s central location, industrial expertise, and world-renowned port infrastructure (notably the Port of Antwerp-Bruges) position it uniquely for leadership in the emerging hydrogen economy.

To support this goal, Belgium has unified its regional hydrogen efforts under the newly formed Belgian Hydrogen Council, a collaboration between the Cluster TWEED and the Flemish organization WaterstofNet. Together, they aim to elevate Belgium’s presence at key international forums like Hyvolution, the World Hydrogen Summit, and the European Hydrogen Week.

Wallonia’s H2Hub ecosystem is growing rapidly, with over 100 members and several major projects underway, such as the e-WallonHy and Hydrogen Valley initiatives. Flanders, meanwhile, is advancing through large-scale collaborations, including the Hyoffwind project for offshore wind-powered hydrogen production.

With a goal to import 45 TWh of hydrogen by 2030—using one-third domestically and exporting the rest—Belgium is gearing up with infrastructure investments, research support, and international partnerships.
