The Clean Hydrogen Partnership is a key European public-private initiative supporting research and innovation in clean hydrogen technologies.
Its mission is to advance hydrogen-based solutions by strengthening EU scientific and industrial capacity, accelerating the development of cutting-edge applications in renewable hydrogen production, hydrogen storage, distribution, and fuel cell technologies.
The partnership brings together three major stakeholders:
- The European Union, represented by the European Commission
- The hydrogen industry, through Hydrogen Europe
- The research community, via Hydrogen Europe Research
Established in November 2021 under the Horizon Europe framework, the Clean Hydrogen Partnership builds on the work of its predecessor, FCH 2 JU. With a combined public and private investment exceeding €2 billion for the 2021–2027 period, it represents one of the most significant efforts to make clean hydrogen a cornerstone of Europe’s energy transition.
Guided by the European Union’s Hydrogen Strategy, the Clean Hydrogen JU contributes directly to EU climate goals by funding projects that develop and scale sustainable hydrogen solutions across sectors like transport, buildings, and industry.

The Clean Hydrogen Mission (CHM) is a global initiative advancing research, innovation, and deployment of clean hydrogen technologies to achieve large-scale commercial viability by 2030. It supports deep decarbonization of hard-to-abate sectors like heavy industry and long-distance transport.
A core goal is to develop 100 large-scale hydrogen valleys worldwide. As of mid-2023, 83 projects across 33 countries have been identified.
The CHM emphasizes cost reduction across the hydrogen value chain—from production to end-use—and calls for increased international collaboration and investment.
As an initiative by the Clean Hydrogen Joint Undertaking, the European Hydrogen Observatory (former Fuel Cells & Hydrogen Observatory) is an open platform providing data and up-to-date information about the European hydrogen sector.
The Observatory produces reports compiled based on the information and data collected during the data collection cycle. The objective is to provide stakeholders with valuable informative data to reflect the development of and trends within the sector over the previous year.
