What is it about?

The University of Antioquia and the University of La Guajira became the first higher education institutions in Colombia to produce green hydrogen. This milestone was achieved through a Power-to-Gas pilot project led by the GASURE research group from the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Antioquia, in partnership with the Destacar group at the University of La Guajira since 2020, taking advantage of the renewable energy resources of the La Guajira region. The initiative received funding from the Ministry of Science and Technology of Colombia through World Bank funds and is part of the Scientific Ecosystem for Energy Sustainability in Colombia (Séneca), which aims to contribute significantly to the country’s energy transition. The pilot involves a technological system that converts the kinetic energy of wind and solar radiation into electrical energy. Through electrolysis, it produces green hydrogen; the green hydrogen then reacts with carbon dioxide in a methanation reactor to form methane. This project is developing three lines of work: direct hydrogen combustion, implementation of a blending approach (mixing natural gas and hydrogen), and storage of hydrogen by converting it into methane. Thus, it represents a prominent strategy in the energy transition.
